Brief

Prompted by a deadly outbreak of E coli., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requested an improved design architecture for disease outbreak content.

Project Objectives:

  1. Design a flexible information architecture system to accommodate both outbreak alerts upon initial investigation, ongoing situational updates, and procedural safety advisories.
  2. Redesign pages to be responsive and more visually appealing, utilizing the CDC’s updated UI guidelines, color palette, and visual icon libraries.
  3. Design a scenario-based information architecture, which would allow for the reprioritization of information for a variety of audiences, including:
    • Digital, radio, and television media outlets
    • General consumer populations
    • Restaurants and service providers
    • Medical workers and healthcare facilities.

Process

Relying on CDC data for outbreak alert audiences, prioritization of information was the 1st step in creating an IA blueprint.

When it comes to food safety alerts and outbreak illness investigations, the information is constantly being updated for audiences including general consumers, food establishments, medical workers, and media outlets. The strategy that I proceeded with involved identifying prioritizing the most vital and up-to-date information within the information architecture. This information included status updates, numbers affected, and immediately vital recommendations.

Once the top priority information was established, the remainder of the page was sectioned into pertinent information for each specific audience.

Result

Using the UI library that the CDC rolled out, a fresh, more easily digested and rapidly deployed foundation was established for food safety alerts.
